Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome

HAVS Testing

What Is Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS)?

It’s estimated that 5 million people in the UK may be exposed to Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). Regular and frequent exposure to HAVS can lead to permanent ill health.

HAVS is caused by vibrations from a work activity being transmitted into someone’s hands or arms, and can occur when an employee is:

  • Operating hand held power tools
  • Using hand guided equipment e.g. a vibrating compactor
  • Holding materials which are being processed by a machine

Sound Advice’s occupational health team can advise you on ways to protect your employees; perform HAVS testing and monitoring and provide any ongoing support needed.

Testing for Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome is a 5 tiered process, with different stages dependant on the severity of damage caused by the vibration.

Stages 1 and 2 will be carried out by a Sound Advice Occupational Health Technician.
Stage 3 will be carried out by a Sound Advice Occupational Health Advisor
Stages 4 and 5 will be carried out by an accredited Sound Advice Occupational Health Physician.
