Silicosis
Silicosis or Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis "a factitious word alleged to mean 'a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust, causing inflammation in the lungs." Oxford English Dictionary
What causes Silicosis:
- Silica in crystalline form is toxic to the lining of the lungs. When the two come into contact, a strong inflammatory reaction occurs.
- Over time this inflammation causes the lung tissue to become irreversibly thickened and scarred - a condition known as fibrosis.
- Progressive massive fibrosis is caused by severe scarring and destroys normal lung structures.
- There are 3 types of silicosis dependent upon the air borne concentration of crystalline silica.
- Chronic silicosis usually occurs after 10 or more years of over exposure and is the most common form.
- Accelerated silicosis results from higher exposures and develops over 5 to 10 years.
- Acute silicosis occurs where exposures are the highest and can cause symptoms to develop within a few weeks.
Who is at risk of Silicosis
- Certain coal miners (for example, roof bolters who work at the face of a mining operation)
- Foundry workers
- Lead, copper, silver, and gold miners
- Potters
- Sandblasters
- Sandstone or granite cutters
- Tombstone makers
- Tunnel workers
- Workers who make abrasive soaps
Silicosis Diagnosis is made through chest x-ray and lung function tests.
- Chest x-ray- This helps detect fibrosis or scarring of the lungs.
- Spirometry (lung function tests):
- Can help a doctor diagnose a range of respiratory diseases which might not otherwise be obvious to the doctor or the patient.
- The tests are also used to measure how a lung disease is progressing.
