Asbestosis
What is Asbestosis
Asbestosis is a disease that occurs through inhaling asbestos fibres; this can cause scar tissue to form inside the lungs
- Inhaling asbestos fibres can cause scar tissue (fibrosis) to form inside the lung.
- This predominantly damages the interstitium (the connective tissue between airspaces).
- Scarred lung tissue becomes fibrotic and stiff and therefore does not expand and contract normally, and cannot perform gas exchange.
- The severity of the disease depends upon the duration of exposure to asbestos and the amount inhaled.
- Asbestos exposure can also damage the pleura of the lungs and lead to other diseases and lung cancer.
Who is at risk
- Construction workers who install or remove materials (including insulation) that contain asbestos
- Shipyard workers
- Workers who mine, mill, or manufacture asbestos
- Asbestos has also been known to be brought into the home on shoes, clothes, hair, pet fur or other objects.
Diagnosing Asbestosis
- Chest x-ray: This helps detect fibrosis or scarring of the lungs.
Spirometry (lung function tests)
- Can help a doctor diagnose a range of respiratory diseases which might not otherwise be obvious to the doctor or the patient.
- In asbestosis it may demonstrate a restrictive pattern of lung disease as opposed to obstructive patterns seen in other lung diseases such as asthma.
- The tests are also used to measure how a lung disease is progressing, how serious the lung disease has become and to assess how a patient is responding to different treatments
