The effect of noise at work

Noise induced hearing loss is the most common occupational disease in Europe, accounting for approximately one third of all work related diseases.

Noise at work can cause hearing loss which can either be temporary or permanent.

People can experience temporary deafness after leaving a noisy place, hearing would normally recover in a few hours but this may be a sign that if you continue to be exposed to that level of noise your hearing could be permanently damaged.

Permanent hearing damage can either be caused immediately by sudden, extremely loud explosive noises of gradually through prolonged exposure to noise.

How do you know if you are suffering from hearing loss?

  • If you have problems hearing people in a crowded room (at the pub).
  • If your family tells you to turn the television down.
  • If people are mumbling and not speaking clearly.
  • If you are lip reading.

Excessive exposure to noise also increased the risk of tinnitus. This causes a ringing, hissing or booming sensation in your ears. Tinnitus can be the first sign that you have damaged hearing.

Unfortunately most people do not realise that they have a hearing problem until their hearing is permanently damaged.

Damage to your hearing can affect your life, follow health and safety advice with regards to reducing noise levels and wearing hearing protection, remember young people can be damaged as easily as the old.
