Occupational Asthma
What is Occupational Asthma?
Asthma is respiratory disease that create narrowing of the air passages that results in the individual having difficulty breathing, tightness of the chest, coughing and wheezing.
Occupational Asthma is caused by breathing is specific agents in the workplace.
Isocyanates (e.g. two-pack spray paints), flour dust, grain dust, glutaraldehyde, wood dust, latex powdered natural rubber latex gloves), rosin-cored solder fume, laboratory animals or glues and resins can all cause occupational asthma.
Motor vehicle repairers, bakeries and food processors, beauty services, cleaning services, healthcare services, painters, repairers (including electronics), welders and woodworkers (including forestry) are all associated with occupational asthma
The above substances can cause an abnormal response in the body or a 'sensitization', this can develop after variable periods of exposure.
Symptoms of occupational asthma
The individual may not show any symptoms of the disease or it may be associated with skin problems, or other respiratory issues.
A comprehensive questionnaire and a lung function test are good indicators of an individual having issues with regards to their lungs.
How can occupational asthma be prevented?
The best way to prevent occupational asthma is to remove the hazards. Where this is not possible exposure should be minimised, workers educated and appropriate PPE used.
If you detect an employee's symptoms early enough and reduce their exposure, you will reduce their risk of developing full-blown asthma.
