Working in Confined Spaces
HSE state that every year there are a number of people killed or seriously injured in the UK in confined spaces. Either working in them or attempting to rescue people from them.
Confined space means a space that has any of the following characteristics:
- Limited openings for entry and exit;
- Unfavourable natural ventilation;
- Not designed for continuous worker occupancy.
It includes, but is not limited to:
- Boilers.
- Pressure vessels.
- Cargo holds.
- Ballast tank.
- Double hull spaces.
- Storage tanks.
- Sewage-tanks.
- Pump-rooms.
- Compressor rooms.
- Void spaces.
- Inter-barrier spaces.
- Engine crankcases.
Hazards associated with confined space working include:
- Oxygen deficient atmosphere.
- Fire and explosion.
- Chemicals.
- Dust.
- Noise.
- Manual handling.
- Limited room restricting mobility.
- Deficient lighting.
It is not a legal requirement to have confined space medicals, however working in confined spaces is subject to the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and it is considered good practice to have a medical assessment prior to letting anyone work in a confined space.

This would be assessed by one of our occupational health advisors. If any concerns are highlighted at this point then a face to face medical may be required either by an OHA or by our physician.
